Green Pastures and Still Waters
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” Psalm 23:1-3 (NIV)
What comes to mind when you picture “green pastures” and “still waters”?
Rolling hills of lush grass and beautiful flowers?
The banks of a gently babbling brook?
Blue skies and a gentle breeze?
For many, the mental images conjured up by Psalm 23:1-3 are drastically different than what the original, shepherd-turned-author might have experienced.
Truth is, biblical shepherds cared for their sheep in a dry, parched and monotone land. They certainly didn’t lead their flocks from one grassy buffet to another. Rather, “green pastures” were small tufts of vegetation capable of surviving the relentless sun. “Still waters” were shallow, isolated collections of limited rain. In other words…
The Shepherd described in Psalm 23 isn’t One who provides in excess. Rather, He provides just enough to sustain His sheep, at just the right moment they need it.
His sheep weren’t wallowing in abundance. Rather they followed the voice of their Shepherd, knowing He would guide them exactly where they needed to go.
As you reflect on the 23rd Psalm through this lens, consider these two questions for your own journey.
1. What has you anxious in this moment?
Remember, the Good Shepherd knows exactly what you need. What’s more, He wants to be your Guide and your Great Provider. Follow His leading and surrender your worries to Him!
2. In what areas are you dwelling in excess?
Perhaps this isn’t the place where the Shepherd has led you to dwell. How is He challenging you to step out in faith? What resources has He given you that He intended for greater purposes? How might God use you to provide exactly what others need in the midst of their deserts?
Listen for the Shepherd’s voice. Trust Him.
Follow where He leads.
Your soul will be refreshed as you lie in His green pastures
and follow His guidance to the Living Water.
