A Message from the Director

As I write this, the Chicagoland area is recovering from a series of major storms. I’ve observed people coming to the aid of those around them who are in very difficult circumstances. They are willing to do whatever is needed to help their neighbors recover.

What has struck me is not only the gratitude of those receiving help, but also the joy experienced by those giving it. There is something deeply fulfilling about living with open hands and a generous spirit. In generosity, the blessing goes both ways.

This is a truth that Scripture has taught us for thousands of years. Solomon reminds us, “It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy” (Proverbs 14:21) and, “Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God” (Proverbs 14:31).

As you well know, when we serve and give of ourselves, we honor God. When we honor God, His blessings flow in and through us.

Thank you for allowing God to work in and through your generosity! I hope this issue is both encouraging and educational to you as you consider how, when, and where God is prompting you to give.

And on a personal note, thank you to everyone who helped in my yard and my neighbors’ yards throughout this stormy season. You have been a blessing to me, and I pray I’ll have the opportunity to be the same for you.
